This book exposes the insidious operations of the Knights of the Golden Circle, a group founded by pro-slave capitalists who intended to spit the confederacy from the union, and the annex Mexico and Cuba to form a vast pro-slavery empire around the gulf of Mexico. The group had enormous influence during the civil war period, and asserts that many high level govenment officials were members, including members of Buchanan's cabinet. It was written in 1861 so focus mostly on pre-war activities, but the charges the author makes and his foreknowledge of events are devastating. |
