Frederick William III

(Frederick William III of Prussia)

1770–1840

Frederick William III of Prussia came to power during a particularly difficult time. He spent most of the early part of his kingly career repairing the abuses of his father, Frederick William II, and attempting to tread the line of neutrality between France and the rest of Europe. At age twenty-three he married Louise of Mecklenburg, who famously wept when Napoleon Bonaparte later annexed her home province, despite the Queen’s pleas. Together, he and Louise had ten children, several of whom would go on to be prestigious players on the European stage. Although he lived during one of the most exciting eras in history, Frederick William III’s true legacy seems to be the children, and grandchildren, he left behind, several of whom would later reshape the face of Europe.
